ANNIE, ARE YOU OK?: Timbaland Wants To Be Startin’ Something As He Compares The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM” to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” & The Internet Isn’t Having It

Listen, I have absolutely nothing against the weekend, but I know Michael is up there looking down on us shaking his head at the constant comparisons to artists who will never touch even the hem of his little glittery socks.

Timbaland is undeniably one of the greatest producers of his time, but apparently even musical geniuses opinions aren’t exempt from the collective side eye of the internet. Timbaland came under fire on social media, over the weekend, after comparing The Weeknd’s new album, Dawn FM, to Michael Jackson’s legendary Thriller. The Weeknd dropped off his new project on Friday after short notice and apparently Timbo was feeling the moment.

“This album different y’all. This shit right here on some Thriller shit,” Timbaland said on Instagram Live after hearing the project. “Trust me when I tell you and the way he dropped this shit — yo! Congrats. This shit is amazing.” He added: “This album is beyond great. We need a vinyl to this.”

It didn’t take long for the internet to call out Timbaland for that statement, with many pretty much agreeing that while The Weeknd may have put together a great project… Thriller may have been stretching this out a bit. “I f***s with Timbaland but this type cappin is nuts and disrespectful to Michael jackson thriller,” one person wrote. “Timbo wyling.”

Another added: “Timbaland gushing about how Weeknd’s new joint is some ‘Thriller shit’ sent me. I was largely unmoved three tracks in and are in no rush to get back to it.”

Thriller was released in November 1982 and was produced by Quincy Jones. It is widely considered one of the best pop albums of all time so it’s understandable why Timaland’s comparison may have sparked this reaction. Interestingly enough, Quincy Jones appears on the interlude, “A Tale by Quincy,” off of Dawn FM.

Check out the video as well as responses to it below and let us know what you think. Are you feeling The Weeknd’s new album? Is it really epic to the point of Michael proportions?
