You know what, ‘Kill Bill’ is such a strong song on it’s own that any remix was going to be a challenge because it would take on the task of actually brining something special to the original. Do you guys think Doja did that?
Well, it looks like Doja Cat wasn’t playing when she said she was looking to hop more into her rap bag this upcoming era and she gave fans a preview of that on her remix of “Kill Bill” by SZA. Moreover, the recently released reimagining caught a lot of people’s ears on social media, and it seems for the most part folks are feeling it. Doja managed to match the original’s lyrical and theatric focus and from the looks of things people ate it up.
“Doja told a story!” a fan wrote on Twitter shortly after the song’s release. “Her verse gave mentally unstable ex out for revenge and the calm delivery of her rapping adds to that effect. Her storytelling was outstanding and really painted a picture to the listeners while staying on topic. She’s really got IT.” Along with this tweet came many others that praised Doja Cat’s performance alongside SZA’s melodies.
For those unfamiliar, throughout Doja’s career, while she’s seen an undeniable amount of success there has been the consistent critique that she’s not really a “rapper” despite what she and her dedicated fans argue. This isn’t really helped as she’s been able to snatch up most of her awards from other genres such as pop and R&B, something that may not necessarily her fault as much as it is the industry’s for seeing the need to put a specific label on everything.
So it’s understandable that over the last few weeks that Doja has been making it a point to state that her next album, presumably titled ‘Hellmouth,’ will be much more hip hop focused. Although, Doja trolls so regularly on Twitter that it’s hard to believe any of that until it’s actually uploaded to iTunes. Anyway, take a listen to the ‘Kill Bill’ remix followed by a few reactions below and let us know your thoughts. Did Doja nail this?\
