You guys ever not necessarily enjoyed a song…but also found yourself continuously singing the chorus after your listen?
It’s bun’s outs and tongues out. Jamaican dancehall artist Shenseea shared the music video for her latest single with H-Town Hottie Megan Thee Stallion called “Lick.” As anticipated, the Murda Beatz–produced “Lick” an explicit little number that includes a sample of Pupa Nas T and Denise Belfon’s “Work.”
While I myself expected this to be a huge breakout moment for Shenseea who I’ve liked a lot of what I’ve heard from in the past, I’m not quite sure if this hit the mark for what I was expecting or hoping for, which seems to be the general consensus based on the mixed response the song has been receiving online. In the hours since the song dropped, Shenseea has received plenty of feedback; with some even calling Megan’s verse the only saving grace of the song. Ironically enough, another consistent critique that seems to be floating around sees the track and especially the video being branded by fans as an attempt to create a moment similar Cardi B’s already iconic “WAP.”
“I knew it was a bootleg ‘WAP’ just from the cover art,” one person tweeted earlier this week. Others added, “It fits more of Megan’s flow. I’m a huge Shenseea fan and the song just doesn’t fit HER,” and “Shenseea can rap as we’ve seen with her freestyles. So please tell me why she allowed Meg to eat her up while she bawling bout ‘put yuh back in it.'”
On the flip side, of course, some fans rushed to thee Hot Girl’s defense. “Y’all knew Meg was on a song w/ Shenseea called ‘Lick,'” they wrote. “What did y’all think she was gonna rap about? The effects the almost three-year-long pandemic has had on our political system, our economy, and our quality of life? Y’all got the same takes every time. Meg did what she had to do.”
The video sees the ladies looking gorgeous as everwith all the ass-shaking, tongues wagging, and a NSFW vaginal lips scene that I don’t think anyone necessarily saw coming.
