Miley Cyrus is so done with hip-hop.
Yes – the same Cyrus who treated parts of black culture, dance and style as accessories a few years back –told Billboard she was backing away from rap because of its lyrical content.
In discussing the album’s single “Malibu,” Cyrus spoke glowingly about her new “rootsy” music.
Then, she started talking about hip-hop.
“But I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song [“Humble”]: ‘Show me somethin’ natural like a** with some stretch marks.’ I love that because it’s not ‘Come sit on my d***, suck on my c***.’ I can’t listen to that anymore.”
Adjust your side-eye and then read what she added next:
“That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my c***’—I am so not that,” she added.
She also addressed the allegations of cultural appropriation that faced her with the release of her last album, Bangerz. “That became a thing, where people said I was taking advantage of black culture, and with [Bangerz collaborator] Mike [WiLL Made-It]—what the f***?” Cyrus said. “That wasn’t true. Those were the dancers I liked!”
Of course, the backlash against Cyrus’ comments was swift and merciless, with many calling her out for playing to the same stereotypes that white people have been using for years to put down hip-hop:
