RIP BABY GIRL: Remembering Aaliyah Dana Haughton on What Would Have Been Her 37th Birthday

Years after her death, fans continued to pay tribute to R&B singer and actress Aaliyah on social media sites Friday by wishing her a happy birthday. The music and film star would have turned 37. She died in 2001 in the Bahamas en route to Miami in an aviation accident at the age of 22. She had been in the island nation to film a music video.

Aaliyah was a multiplatinum-selling artist who earned Grammy nominations for her songs “Are You That Somebody?” and “Try Again.” A year before her death, she took on Hollywood, making her acting debut in the Jet Li film “Romeo Must Die.” She also played Queen Akasha in the “Queen of the Damned,” the horror film based on the Anne Rice vampire novel.

Aaliyah, who grew up in Detroit, began her career at the age of 15. Her music stood out compared with other teenage artists because of its mature, sultry sounds. Some of her more popular songs include “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “Miss You” and “Rock the Boat.”

I sometimes think it’s almost a crime that the younger generation will never get to experience the beauty and artist that was Aaliyah. In honor of what would have been her 37th birthday, below are 5 of her most popular music videos, hand picked by me:

What were some of your personal fav Aaliyah hits?
