It didn’t take long for Fergie’s avant-garde jazz-inspired rendition of the United States National Anthem to solidify itself in the annals of history. Upon being the subject of countless memes, jokes, and general clowning, Fergie has come forward to clear the air. While she didn’t exactly stand by her work, she did maintain that the effort was genuine, and came from a place of patriotic love.
The singer spoke with TMZ about her performance. “I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” explains Fergie. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.” To be fair, not every effort is going to be a home run. It’s too bad the former Black Eyed Pea temporarily became a laughing stock, but the laughs might have been worth it. Hopefully Fergie can brush this one off, chalk it up in the L column and move on to the next move.
Like a pagan chant, there’s something hellishly hypnotic about her rendition. Perhaps it will gain a cult following, eventually leading to an official studio recording.
