Well, any trap queens hoping Fetty was coming home anytime soon will have to wait a bit longer. Six years to be exact.
In August 2022, Fetty Wap pled guilty to federal drug smuggling charges. He was initially arrested in October 2021 and charged over his alleged involvement in a widescale New York smuggling operation. A court trial was avoided as Wap’s legal team entered into discussions with prosecutors about a plea deal. This came after Wap initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Wap’s charges carried a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, but the extent of Wap’s involvement led to speculation that despite the plea deal, prosecutors may push for a harsher sentence. Meanwhile, the rapper’s lawyers tried to paint a more sympathetic picture, attesting that Wap’s involvement was due to his larger financial struggles. They stated that “Personal gain was not his motivation. Rather, he was motivated by his commitment to financially support others. He now realizes that he does not have to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.” However, a recent report indicated that prosecutors had played Wap’s 2014 hit “Trap Queen” as evidence to support a harsher sentence.
A first reported by The New York Times, we now know how long Fetty Wap will spend behind bars. The judge settled on a six-year sentence, which served as a comprise between the five-year mandatory minimum and the seven-year, three-month sentence requested by prosecutors. Prosecutors had pushed for the higher sentence as a rejection of Wap’s legal claims. “The defendant told the Probation Department that he made $5 million during his music career. Nevertheless, this defendant chose to supplement his income by trafficking large quantities of drugs — drugs he knew would ruin lives.”
It is unknown where Wap will serve his sentence but it will most likely be at a facility in New York City or wider New York state. Given the mandatory minimum sentence of five years, Wap will not be eligible for parole until 2028. Damn man.
