PROBLEM OR REACHING?: Some Are Calling R&B Singer Ginuwine Transphobic Because He Said He Wouldn’t Knowingly Date a Transgender Woman

In case you haven’t heard, R&B singer Ginuwine has entered the house of Celebrity Big Brother UK.

During Saturday night’s episode, the housemates debated over their dating preferences after transgender newsreader India Willoughby asked Ginuwine if he would date her. India and the others were sitting in the garden when she asked some of the new male arrivals if they would ever date a transsexual woman, as Jonny Mitchell said he looks for “personality” in a partner.

“For me this is the problem, I feel like a lot of guys would not go out with me even though I’m a woman,” she said.

Ginuwine said that some men would, but housemate Courtney Act argued that some men see the idea of dating a trans woman as “emasculating” and view sexuality as “binary”.

Ginuwine added that he “believed it was a choice.” Before stating that he wouldn’t be “scared” – though he said again that he would not date a trans woman.

“I’ve tried to date, guys have chatted me up not knowing my past, but as soon as they find out – woah,” India said. “I’m just a woman, forget about any Ts – so on that score [Ginuwine] would you date me?”

The “So Anxious” singer replied he would date her as a “woman” though not a “trans woman”, leading to India jokingly embrace him, asking for a kiss.

Ginwine immediately pulled back, before housemate Courtney joked: “He’s just not that into you.”

“Both of those responses illustrate my case 100%,” India said. Before eventually storming off. This then let two Twitter immediately taking sides between India and Ginuwine in the conversation.
