YOU SHOULD KNOW: August Alsina Claims Def Jam’s Holding Him & His Album Hostage

August Alsina isn’t too pleased with his label, Def Jam, and wants to be free from its shackles. The 25-year-old R&B singer called out the label on Monday (November 13) for allegedly holding his forthcoming album (and himself) hostage.

“I would love to put my album out but DEF JAM is holding it/me hostage because the system is not up & running until next year so they basically dont exist,” he tweeted in response to a fan asking about the status of his LP. “The label is just TRASH .. I will release free music soon but that has been the hold up. Tell Them to FREE ME & the Album.”

This is not the first time Yung Aug has aired out his disappointment with Def Jam. The last project he dropped was 2015’s This Thing Called Life, which leaked a day before its scheduled release date. The New Orleans singer blamed the label for the leak in a series of tweets.

Despite the leak, This Thing Called Life pushed nearly 41,000 units in the first week of its release, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 200 and #2 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
