Ice is definitely sticking to her formula, but is this a welcome addition to her growing catalog or are we ready for something different?
Love her or hate her, Ice Spice is undoubtedly one of the most notable breakout stars in the current music landscape. Seemingly coming out of nowhere, the Bronx “baddie” has since captured the hearts of many with tracks like “Munch (Feelin’ U), “Bikini Bottom,” “In Ha Mood” and “Princess Diana,” all from her debut EP ‘Like?…’ which was initially released at the top of the year. Now, Ice is looking to capitalize on that success with an interesting move, releasing a deluxe version of the EP this past week.
Ice has added four new tracks to the original 6 track EP, with the chosen single from that set seeming to be the production heavy thumper, “Deli.” Thanks to her strategic marketing team, snippets of “Deli” have been circulating on social media for the last few weeks, generating hype for the single before Spice even officially shared it with a large number of TikTok’s featuring girls sharing slide shows and selfies to the tune of the song.
Now that the song has officially arrived, one has to wonder if it will capitalize on the initial social media hype or if it will fizzle out. The song is pretty standard from what we’ve come to quickly know Ice Spice for. An infectious party ready beat with easy to sing-a-long lyrics, “She a baddie, she showin’ her panty, She shake it like jelly, Hunnid bands in Chanely, But I’m still shakin’ ass in a deli,” she raps. It’s by no means meant to be a lyrical masterpiece which I think has become pretty expected from Spice and it’s the thumping production of the song that’s likely to suck listeners in who do become fans of the track.
The video is also fairly basic and true to formula for Ice Spice. She’s seen on a party bus as we’ve seen in some of her other videos, before taking it..you guessed it, to a deli where most of the video takes place. Honestly, I’m more so just looking forward to seeing Ice put an end to the ‘Like..?’ era and shows us what to expect from her debut album because right now everything is a bit one note. Take a look at the video for ‘Deli’ below and let us know your verdict. ISSA BOP OR ISSA FLOP?
