ISSA BOP OR ISSA FLOP?: Doja Cat Has Officially Entered Her Hip Hop Era & Is Ready to Silence Her Critics with “Attention” (VIDEO)

Doja basically said “if you don’t think I’m a rapper… this one is for you.” Was her message received?

Doja Cat has been teasing new music for  some time.. Now, after much anticipation, time, and trolling, Doja has released the music. One of the common criticisms Doja has seen throughout her career is that many have not viewed her as a rapper. Some have even went as far as to label her as a pop star. Now, while I get that much of Doja’s success has been with commercial records and it can get confusing with her consistently being nominated in award categories such as R&B, anyone who has listened to a full length Doja project can definitely attest that she does very much rap.

That being said, over the last few months Doja made it clear that her upcoming era was going to be more hip hop based to prove her case and well.. we’re here. For fans that thought Doja Cat’s feature on SZA’s “Kill Bill” was a sign of the sound to come can celebrate. They were certainly correct. However, it is not quite as much of a switch up from previous material as it may have seemed. While the new single is different, it certainly still feels very much like Doja Cat… and I think that’s a good thing.

“Attention” is a sleek, sexy, dark single about being in the public eye. The vibe is very reminiscent of the moody dark pop sound of the early 2000’s. On the track, she addresses everything that she has been dealing with for the last year or so. She speaks on the critiques and attention she receives and how people don’t really care about the music. This has been a major complaint from the artist during her many online rants in recent months. However, if that is what inspired the new direction, perhaps more people should make Doja angry as she certainly shines on the new single. “Now I feel like I can see you b**ches is depressed,” Doja raps. “I am not afraid to finally say sh*t with my chest.”

Stylistically, it may not be as big of a jump as some wanted from Doja, but this is personally one of my favorite releases from her yet and it made me excited to see what’s next. I don’t know that this is necessarily a radio smash.. but I honestly don’t think that was Doja’s goal here. Take a look at the video for yourself and let us know your thoughts.
