Cardi B’s been dealing with some issues with her former manager, Klenord “Shaft” Raphael. He sued Cardi B in April after claiming that she breached their contract after she let him go as their manager. Now, he’s seeking $10M from the “Be Careful” singer in his lawsuit against her. However, Cardi B isn’t letting this happen without a fight. She’s now reportedly countersuing the former manager for taking advantage of her lack of education.
According to TheBlast, Cardi B’s now countersuing Shaft for taking advantage of her lack of knowledge in the music industry. Cardi filed new documents in the lawsuit on June 1st that revealed that she put her trust in Raphael and his companies with her business and said “that trust was abused.” She also stated that he took advantage of her “trust and naiveté and persuaded her to sign contracts and to enter into deals in which Mr. Raphael attempted to take an unreasonable and unconscionable portion of [her] earnings in the entertainment industry for himself.”
In addition, the legal doc reads, “It appears that Plaintiff took advantage of an inexperienced young woman with considerable talent and charisma, but with a limited education who lacked experience in the age-old exploitative market of the entertainment industry.” She also says he “grossly exaggerates” his role as manager, although she admits he played a role in her development.
Cardi says that she signed a deal with Raphael’s company without a lawyer which resulted in her manager making 20% of her earnings. She says he breached their contract after he failed to give her give her the proper payments owed, didn’t show monthly accounting as well as failing to find her an indepedent business manager.
Now, Cardi claims Raphael put one of his own companies as a middle party between herself and her label, Atlantic records. She asys the company collected half of her royalties and made her sign all her copyrights to the company. She’s now countersuing Raphael for “for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, accounting, unjust enrichment, and potentially other claims.”
