QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS: Quavo Finally Speaks Out on Nicki Minaj & Cardi B Being Seperated in the ‘Motorsport’ Video; Calls it a Missed Opportunity: “We tried, They Played Themselves”

Never one to hold back what’s on his mind, Beats 1 host and Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden let the world know he saw something of a wasted opportunity when Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, two of rap’s most popular rappers at the moment, didn’t appear onscreen together in Migos’ video for “MotorSport.” He said as much when the video premiered a little over a month ago (Dec. 8).

Now, we learn that moment—or lack thereof—was also something Quavo and his group tried to bring to fruition. The rapper says as much in a new Beats 1 Radio interview with Ebro.

“We tried to create that moment…you dig?” Quavo says. While we didn’t get an epic Cardi-Nicki moment in the video, everyone in Quavo, Offset, and Ebro himself, say the track was still a huge moment for the culture—which is something we know Quavo, Offset and Takeoff are all about.

“I love it,” Offset says of “MotorSport.” “When it be in the moment, outside the moment, it touch everybody. You know when you got the trap records, all the girls, you can have a nice trap record, everybody going crazy, for like—And that record going crazy. Women poppin’ they shit, men poppin’ they shit.”

Offset goes on to say that sometimes, they let the record just play out during their shows, and everyone in the crowd goes crazy, rapping along the verses as if Cardi and Nicki are actually there.

For his part, Quavo, who calls “MotorSport” one of his favorite records, isn’t letting the lack of the Nicki-Bardi video shot take away from the song’s significance.

“At the end of the day, I feel like that record’s still a moment,” Quavo says. “Just the record alone. Hearing both of them on one song, go at it,” he continues, adding that both rappers spazzed. “We made a moment for hip-hop,” Offset chimes in. “Again.”

“MotorSport” will appear on the group’s forthcoming album, Culture II, due Jan. 26.
