NOT TODAY: Cardi B Reportedly Turns Down Super Bowl Halftime In Support of Colin Kaepernick

“There [were] talks about it, but she was not particularly interested…”

Cardi B is the latest hip-hop star to reportedly turn down performing at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick and his movement to combat social injustice. Cardi’s rep released a statement to the folks over at Page Six confirming that the Bronx native was not interested in appearing at the sports event due to Kap’s current circumstances.

Page Six originally reported that the “I Like It” artist was seeking millions to play a solo show during the halftime performance. Artists don’t typically receive a fee for playing at halftime, as the performance naturally gains them more publicity. Nevertheless, Cardi’s rep shot down those rumors. While the rapper had been in talks to play during the show, she later rejected the offer.

“The rumor circulating that she wants a million dollars and she wants her own set is false. There was never a firm offer to begin with for a performance,” the rep told Page Six. “There [were] talks about it, but she was not particularly interested in participating because of how she feels about Colin Kaepernick and the whole movement,” the rep told Page Six. “But again, there was never a solid offer for her to say yes or no to regarding the Super Bowl. She is already confirmed to do a set with Bruno Mars that weekend.”

Cardi, who has previously expressed her support for Kaepernick, follows the lead of Rihanna and Jay-Z, who also turned down the Super Bowl in light of the blacklisted quarterback. Travis Scott, on the other hand, is still expected to perform alongside the headlining act Maroon 5, despite pleas from Meek Mill and Jay-Z.

The Super Bowl LIII halftime show will kick off on Feb. 3, 2019, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
