GIRL, WHAT?: Did Nicki Minaj Just Accuse Missy Elliott of Shading Her? – “But it’s All Love on This Side!”

The anticipation of the final sales numbers for Nicki Minaj’s Queen were a bit intense. The artist and her fans were hoping the album would debut at the top spot and knock out Travis Scott’s Astroworld from its one-week reign. Unfortunately for them, Scott’s album was officially announced as this week’s chart-topping album on Billboard 200 with the stats to prove it.

Nicki quickly followed the announcement by taking to Twitter to vent about why his win was unfair. The female emcee insists that his bundling efforts were bogus. According to her, even Travis knows his album isn’t truly number 1.

In defense of why the album deserved the top spot, Nicki then posted a screenshot of an article written by the folks over at XXL Mag, which featured the headline: “Is Nicki the best female lyricist of all time?”

While the answer to that question, is another story in itself, Nicki complimented the post with a caption reading: “S/O to everyone who still have these debates. They matter. I’m honored to be a part of this conversation. My favorite lyricists were both men AND women. I hope I make them proud. Who are your top 5 lyricists?”

As expected, fans began to name several different names as their top lyricists…and here’s where things got interesting. When one fan mentioned the legendary “Missy Misdemeanor Elliott,” Nicki quickly followed asking the user what their favorite lyrics by Missy were. One of Nicki’s loyal “barbs” them chimed in with a quick “Girl, f*ck her, she be shading you”… to which Nicki replied, “I KNOW, but it’s all love on my end.” GIRL, WHAT?”

Now, I’m not exactly the Wikipedia source for the history of Missy Elliott, but I do believe that Elliott is one of the most respectable MC’s male or female who have been in the game for decades and managed not to engage in any beef nonsense.

Some of you may remember back in 2015 where Billboard published an interview with Elliott, where her words seemed to have been misconscrued by fans of Minaj. Missy was being asked her opinions on various names in the new generation of hip hop, of the newer class, Missy stated she loves Drake and Kendrick Lamar. When Billboard brought up Nicki’s name, Billboard tried it, writing:

“When asked about Nicki Minaj, who is clearly influenced by Elliott, she mock-innocently replies, ‘Oh, she is?’ (Speaking to her influence generally, she adds, ‘Unfortunately, breaking news, there is only one Missy.’)”

It wasn’t outright shade, but it was all Nicki’s Barbz needed to get into Missy’s mentions about the editorially implied slight. However before that grew into a bigger problem, Elliott quickly hopped on Twitter and denounced the drama stating: “I’m about uplifting people positive energy it’s hard enough out here 4 artist no need to put us against each other💯🙏🏾❤️”

This latest side comment by Nicki has ruffled many feathers on Twitter, as Minaj fans and Missy fans have began to go back and forth about whether that statement is true or not. Take a look at it all below:
