Back in 2015, Safaree and Erica Mena met, just as his lengthy relationship with Nicki Minaj ended and Mena’s engagement to Bow Wow was called off. The notorious reality stars became friends and starred on VH1’s Scared Famous together in 2017… fast forward to today, and the two are in love and engaged.
Safaree stopped by HOT 97 to talk to Nessa about his new song ‘No Regular Girl,’ though she was initially their to support her fiance, Erica later joined the interview. They talked about the first time they met, what made them fall in love with each other, who said I love you first, and surpsingly…Nicki Minaj.
During a small portion of the interview, Nessa asks Erica if she listens to Nicki Minaj’s music, mentioning that as an artist, musicians seems to have a different appreciation for music regardless of personal opinions. To which Erica responded,
“Honestly, I grew up on Lil’ Kim so heavy…that when that came out, I was like, ughhh she’s biting my girl!. I’ve never been drawn to it. I just feel like it was too cartoony and stuff.” Before continuing, “I mean, she’s great at what she does, like if you’re in the club, you’re nice, and it’s on…but I don’t know the words.”
Considering Erica was born in the era as many of us who appreciate Lil’ Kim, it’s hard to look at her statement as “shade” rather than her own personal truth. Per usual, following the interview, Nicki Minaj’s “Barbz” were hot on Erica’s trail as they began to post old tweets of Erica celebrating Nicki from years ago.
