Megan Thee Stallion says her award was for a song and not a video.
On this morning’s episode of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne The God questioned how Megan Thee Stallion won an MTV Video Music Award for “Hot Girl Summer,” a song that doesn’t have an official video yet. The remark was valid and many echoed his sentiment on social media. Also noting it to be strange that a song released so recently, wouldn’t have fell within the nomination cut off timeframe, so many wondered how this newly announced award came to be Thee Stallion’s. However, Megan didn’t let people wonder for too long about how she nabbed the big prize last night because she just explained her side of what went down on Twitter.
The official name of MTV’s top ceremony is the Video Music Awards. Thus, it’s understandable that people assume they only celebrate the finest achievements in music videos from the last year. However, there are also prizes for hype songs and Meg was grateful to accept one last night. After taking home the award for “Power Anthem,” she spoke out on Twitter to address those who were confused about her win.

“Also for you silly mfs questioning how we won a VMA … the award was for a song,” said Meg, indirectly responding to Charlamagne Tha God’s comment. “‘POWER ANTHEM’ the PEOPLE VOTED💁🏽♀️ hotties have pull.”
I also can’t believe that I collaborated with @NICKIMINAJ !!! This woman is one of the greatest to ever fucking do it 🙏🏽💙 THANK YOU 🦄

Moments before sending off the tweet, she then went a little crazy over the fact that she legitimately worked with Nicki Minaj on a song. She wrote: “I also can’t believe that I collaborated with @NICKIMINAJ !!! This woman is one of the greatest to ever fucking do it 🙏🏽💙 THANK YOU.”
This wasn’t the only controversy around Megan’s win as many pointed out the fact that the award was one of the only fan voted categories of the night. Apparently, Minaj’s dedicated fanbase “The Barbz” pulled a few different tricks out of their sleeves to make sure that their votes were counted in mass flowings for their “queen.” One including a Twitter link promising a “Free Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich” but actually linking to a vote for “Hot Girl Summer,” and another which did the same thing claiming to be a story about Drake’s “homosexual lover” speaking out…. I— have never seen such creativity. At this point I suppose those fans did their job, huh?
Can’t hate Megan for the win, congratulations are still in order for her first VMA. Regardless of all the naysayers questioning it’s legitimacy. Thoughts?
