ISSA BOP OR ISSA FLOP?: Saweetie Takes A Softer Approach For Her Latest Track “Back to the Streets” featuring Jhené Aiko (LISTEN)

Saweetie decided to get her singing on for this mellow track.

Saweetie and Jhené Aiko seem to be pretty fond of one another. The “Icy” rapper previously linked with Jhené on the singer’s remix to her “Triggered” track, while Aiko dropped a verse to the remix of Saweetie’s hit “My Type.” The pair of artists linked up once again for the Bay Area rapper’s single “Back to the Streets,” and it’s a smoother delivery than we’re used to hearing from Saweetie, but it’s a sound that fits well within Jhené’s vibe.

Co-produced with Timbaland, the sassy track is an ode to “F boys” — the men Saweetie enjoys for however long she wants to before moving on to the next one. “I put my new man on a leash/Traded in my old ni**a he was just a lease,” she raps. “Ride around town ’til I leave/I gave that boy a round and sent him back to the streets.” The single comes with an animated lyric video, depicting Saweetie and Jhené Aiko as fairies in the forest, reminiscent of Fern Gully. (Did I just show my age there?)

In a statement, Saweetie explained of the song, “I’m just so tired of the sad breakup songs. I wanted something fun – something the girls (and the boys) can party to and celebrate their independence. You know? Cuz sometimes getting back to the streets ain’t all the bad and if you dealing with an F boy or dealing with somebody who wasting your time you gotta send them back to the streets too! So you know what? Level up and celebrate your independence and keep getting to the bag, boo.”

We’re not sure when Pretty B*tch Music is going to be released, but over the summer, Saweetie spoke about what fans can expect from the project. “The key inspirations behind my new album was being a boss, getting money, loving my family, talking about them more and also just exploring my Filipino roots again,” she previously revealed in inteviews. “I wanted to do something that highlighted the Filipino culture because I have a couple lyrics that are in Tagalog so I think that’s cool.” While fans wait to hear more about the album, take a listen to “Back to the Streets” and let us know if you think Saweetie has a hit on her hands.
